PWCkayakers Sequim Bay Trip Report
Chris, Lee, Paul, Bruce, Greg, Jolynn, Tom, and Mike drove through wet rainy countryside to arrive at a dry and windless Sequim Bay. The bay's surface was silvery and reflective, showing off impressive horizontal bands of clouds to the south. We were treated to a few light sun showers as we paddled northward, and for twenty minutes witnessed a dramatic double rainbow over the Strait of Juan DeFuca.
Waterfowl were everywhere: surf scoters, kingfishers, buffleheads, cormorants, bald eagle, and many I'm unsure of. While exploring the large estuary near the sand spit at the head of the bay, 12 great blue heron launched into the air at the same time.
We checked out the impressive collection of Yachts and Sailboats moored in the John Wayne marina and then headed back to Sequim Bay State Park. Paddling by the end of the marina's heavy stone breakwater, Jolynn pointed out a flock of about 30 sandpipers nestled into the rocks - resembling small brown and white feathered puffballs.
Although the forecast predicted unremittent rain, we experienced an unexpectedly serene and beautiful day on the water.
