Mount Townsend 3-6-2010

Postby JayThompson » Sun Mar 07, 2010 8:50 am

Having not been out on many trips this winter and just recovering from a nasty cold the week before, I headed up the Mount Townsend trail with Jim, Don, Ronda and Robbin. I only mention the cold and my lack of going on many trips because I must be seriously out of shape. I was dragging on this trip when usually I feel stronger on these short climbs. At any rate, after meeting up at the park and ride, and Jim graciously driving us to the trail head, we headed up the trail. We did not hit snow until around 4000 feet or maybe a little higher. Once in the snow we all donned traction in the form of Microspikes or Yaktrax and continued on. At around 5000' we took a snack break and I headed up a little higher to try to set up to take some pictures as the others headed up. I think I mostly succeeded in getting a few good shots with my new camera but I regret not having a polarizing filter yet. You can see how blown out the sky looks in a few of the shots.

Onward and upward we went after the little photo shoot and continued on until we reached the top. We all immediately put on our extra layers. Being quite warm on the way up, it was a bit chilly on the breezy top of Mount Townsend and I was glad I brought my down jacket.

As the others rested and enjoyed the views, I ate a quick snack and was off to see what else I could capture with my new (did I mention bulky and heavy?) camera.

After about 45 minutes of lounging in the sun, we all decided it was a bit too chilly to really enjoy and we packed up and headed out. A little ways down the summit ridge, we again stopped, this time to shed some layers and for me to waste some more space on my camera's memory card.

We all noticed how much warmer it was out of the wind and someone wondered whether we should have had our little rest down here where it wasn't so breezy. On the way down, the snow had become kind of sloppy in a few spots as it had been melting in the sun. It was quite warm out as well and felt great. Not too often you have 60 degree days in the mountains in March. Spring definitely feels like it is 3 or 4 weeks early this year. Hiking down, we were soon back to Jim's car. We all were satisfied with the exercise we got and were happy we carried our snowshoes to the top and back. rant

Nice pictures Jay. Robbin has two "b's". You can fix the sky with a little photoshop paint-bucket blue. Looking forward to next time. Jim

Thanks Teresa, this hike actually is not too much harder than Walker once the snow melts. In the snow it requires a little more equipment and experience - ice axe, traction, etc. I'm not sure which trail gets hiked more, Townsend or Walker, but I know the views from Townsend trump Walker's any day. You should consider hiking this one this summer, you won't be disappointed (unless it is cloudy).
