UPDATE: The reservation dates for the White Rim (two, 3-day reservations in April), and the final dates for the group site at Squaw Flats in the Needles District (end of April) are on the calendar. Tony Abruzzo will be having another planning meeting at his place on Feb 11 at 6PM.

Canyonlands Adventure April 2010

Tony Abruzzo and Bob Brown plan to spend two weeks at the Squaw Flats campground in Canyonlands (Needles District) in April. He hopes to spend one week of this time in the group campground with fellow PWCers. This campground is ranked 1st in the National Parks by a recent poll. They will stay in other campground sites at Squaw Flats the other days.

They will submit applications for the group site which will go into a lottery.

1st choice is for April 18 - April 24
2nd choice April 25 - -May 1
3rd choice is April 11 - April 17

He hopes to have 15 - 20 people staying at the group site with him. There will be at least 6 people who will submit reservation requests on January 4rth (the earliest postmarked date the Park Service will accept in the lottery). The more of us who submit requests, the better our chances of obtaining a slot at the group campsite. Those reserving the group campsite don't have to stay for the entire week, but will be expected to pay $3 per person per day ($21 for one week), because this is the Park service fee for the reservation.

Tony will bring completed request forms to the December PWC meeting for those willing to send them in with the $15 fee.

A tour of the White Rim trail by car and bicycle will be undertaken by our group as an optional adventure. Those who want to explore the White Rim will leave Needles district and drive north to Island in the Sky district. The trail is 105 miles in length with little shade, overlooking the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers. We have two different 3-day / 2-night reservations for the White Rim road - the nights of April 14&15 and April 26&27.

The permits allow three 4-wheel-drive vehicles and up to 15 people. Four of the six available vehicle spots have been taken, with the two remaining spots to be determined by a drawing at the next planning meeting in late January/early February. The vehicles will serve as sag wagons for people wanting to mountain bike / tent.

Spectacular hiking (day or multi-day) is available from the group campsite in Needles District. Those with cars, or able to borrow cars, can drive to numerous other world class destinations. These include Arches, the Slick Rock trail, or , or, or , numerous other hike / biking choices.

It takes two to three days (approximately 21 hours driving time and 1400 miles) to drive to The Needles.
